The Misguided Alarm Ordinance

False Alarms and Peddlers Oh My !

Going back to the March 17, 2009 Fiscal Court meeting...

One has to wonder how effective Magistrate Bob Deibel is anymore. He had taken it upon himself at a previous meeting of Fiscal Court to introduce both the "Peddler's" and "Alarm" ordinances.

Needless pieces of legislation on both counts. Ill prepared when it came time to discuss them both...since no hard facts were presented to the Court. Seriously, he stated that the Oldham County Police Chief Colonel Michael Griffin tells him that the OCPD makes and I quote from the meeting, "thousands" of false alarm runs every year and it's getting out of hand ! Really ? If he wanted to present the true facts, then he should have called upon the police chief to appear before the Court with documentation of his numbers. Furthermore, he repeatedly referred to the police department as the "OCD", and not the "OCPD".

Both pieces of legislation were passed with Magistrates Rick Rash, Bob Leslie and Scott "the fact of the matter is..." Davis voting against the "Peddler's" ordinance and Magistrates Steve Church, Scott "the fact of the matter is... Davis and David Voegele voting against the "Alarm" ordinance.

Thankfully, the "Alarm" ordinance has been called back for a revisiting and hopefully it will be eliminated from consideration...since both ordinances are little more than a way to further tax and impose fees upon the residents of Oldham County in one way or another.

I realize that Magistarte Deibel has served this county many years in various capacities, and don't doubt his love for Oldham County, but it is becoming more and more obvious that he is past his prime. No one wants to hear how things used to be done on the Court...this is now, not then and it's time for progressive leadership...not the same "good ol' boy" way of doing things in the past.

Let's hope he'll seriously considering retiring from the Court at the end of his present term and let some fresh faces and ideas be brought to the Court. Bringing matters before the Court and public, at the least require a Magistrate to be fully prepared with facts and sound reasoning for introducing legislation, whether it be a resolution or an ordinance.

It's the least a Magistrate can do for the public they were elect to serve.

  1. I understand how a $20 fee for having a burgalar almarm puts a charge on someone, but you said that "both" ordinances put charges on county residents. I thought the peddler's ordinance required "out of county" peddlers to register with the police and pay a fee. How is this a charge on county residents?

  2. It would be a charge on Oldham County residents who may also make their living through "peddling" type of work. We are taxed enough as it is...the Storm Water fee as an example...why should I (who owns a smaller lot) pay the same fee as someone who has a home sitting on an acre or so ? I simply tell "peddlers" of all types, "no thank you" and think others can do the same. Even Magistrate Greenwell said the same thing during the open court discussion before they voted on the ordinance. My main point is that neither of these ordinances well very well thought out.

  3. My fault for the typo above...last sentence should read as follows:

"My main point is that neither of these ordinances were very well thought out."

And a couple of other points here...I think that the members of Fiscal Court should be as conservative as possible with our tax dollars and how they spend it. Adding additional fees only creates hardships on some, and while I'm all for weeding out "peddlers" to a degree, this is still a free country. "Peddlers" have a right to try to make a living and homeowners have the right to post "No Trespassing" or "No Soliciting" signs on their property, or they can go one step further, kindly ask "peddlers" to remove their address from their lists for future door-to-door canvassing. I live in a fairly dense neighborhood, and really, "peddling" is not much of an issue at all.

  5. Wow ! Seems like someone knows their Broadway musicals ! Your sense of humor is noted...why not sign your name instead of hiding behind "Anonymous" and finally, at least you're visiting and reading this blog...all I'm trying to do is be a little entertaining at times and add a little spice to the blog. It's your choice to visit or not.

  6. Wow! It seems to me that you would be well served to practice what you preach and at least reveal who YOU are as the "entertaining" Oldham Observer to all of your legions.

  7. Anonymous...you'd be greatly surprised at how many site visits and page views this site has generated in such a short amount of time. Even I'm surprised...and that leads me to believe that I am doing something right, speaking out for the "legions" who feel much the same as I do about the current governmental state of affairs in Oldham County. I've previously explained why, at this point in time I've chosen to withhold my identity, but trust me, in time I will let it be known just who I am. A very concerned Oldham County resident...not some puppet of elected offical(s).
