David Voegele, County Judge/Executive-Elect

Oldham County Republicans certainly got it right on May 18th in choosing our next county government leader.

Before moving forward with commentary, let me just say two things:

1 - It's unfortunate that the two-party system is severely slanted in the GOP's favor in Oldham County. That's not a knock by any means towards Mr. Voegele. He ran and won decidedly in the Republican Primary, and he deserves everyone's support as he moves from his Magistrate's seat to the Judge/Executive's seat come January 1, 2011. While he faced off against former Magistrate and Deputy County Judge/Executive Paula Gish in the primary, and handed her and her backers a resounding defeat, it would still be in the best interests of all residents to have a choice come November. Be that as it may, Mr. Voegele took his message and clear vision to the voters, and they responded overwhelmingly to his campaign. And something tells me that if they could have, many Democrats would have voted for him too (including this scribe). It is my hope that the Oldham County Democratic Party will regroup, rebuild and field a full slate of candidates in ALL races come 2014. The two-party system has a purpose, and ALL registered voters need a choice in both primary and general elections.

2 - The second point is that from this writing forward, The Observer will recognize Mr. Voegele as our County Judge/Executive-Elect. This is due to the fact that no Democrat filed to run in the Primary (therefore he faces no ballot competition in November), and it's highly unlikely that any person ("Tea Party" folks included) in this county could mount a write-in campaign that would muster enough votes to win come November. That's called reality folks.

On to the results...

Mr. Voegele ran a clean campaign, spoke at length about his vision for our county, took no campaign money from developers, raised about 1/4 the money that Paula Gish raised, worked tirelessly to get his message out, talked and listened to residents (not just voters) and let people know that he would be a voice for ALL people of Oldham County, not just the "select" few.

He actually had substance to his ideas and visions, not just mere "talking points" and had very effective and creative campaign signs throughout the county. He also proved beyond a shadow of a doubt in his first 3-1/2 years on Fiscal Court that he's not afraid to ask the real questions that need to be addressed, press for answers and sometimes in a subtle way, and sometimes maybe not, buck the "good ol' boy" system that has been in place for far too long. How refreshing to see a true public servant.

Paula Gish on the other hand, gladly took money from developers, other county office holders and employees, and of course, had the endorsement of outgoing Judge/Executive Duane Murner. Didn't work out too well for her, did it ? Plus, having been found in the 11th hour it seems, to be in violation of the Federal Hatch Act, she waited until the last possible minute to resign as Deputy County Judge/Executive (effect last Friday, May 14th) and approved by Fiscal Court on Primary Election Day, May 18th. The media coverage http://http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20100510/NEWS01/5100351/-1/ZONE09/Oldham+deputy+county-judge+resigns+so+she+can+keep+running+for+the+top+job of this surely left a "bad taste" in the mouths of many voters and they showed it at the polls. "End runs" for the "elite" are not acceptable these days, and voters let her know it. Murner and Gish knew the Federal Hatch Act situation was similar to the one already decided in Kenton County, yet chose to drag it out and wait on a ruling from the U.S. Office of Special Counsel. The results could also be seen as a rebuff to the current administration and their policies and perhaps her lackluster campaign.

Mr. Voegele deserves his win and more. He now deserves all of our support, as it is his task, come January, to lead this sometimes troubled county forward. Like any other elected official, he deserves a fair amount of time once he assumes office to begin to put his vision into place. Not everyone will always agree with him, and that's healthy...but he does deserve our respect for his position and time to prove his worth as our next County Judge/Executive.

It will be interesting to watch and see now, how much of an "olive branch" will be offered to him by the current administration and his fellow Magistrates. Mr. Voegele's election has brought hope to our county once again. Hope for truly open, honest and transparent government. Hope for dealing with the fiasco that is called "Oldham Reserve". Hope for our roads, green space, open areas, parks and controlled development. Hope for holding the line on the county budget and expenses, fiscal responsibility with our tax dollars and most of all, maintaining and improving our quality of life, which was one his campaign themes.

Congratulations to Judge/Executive-Elect David Voegele...your hard work, clear vision and hope for our county paid off. You took your message to the people, they listened, and they gave you a clear mandate to lead our county forward come January.

Job well done.

And for the most part, yesterday in the Primary Elections, Oldham Countians got it right !

Comments are forthcoming on those elected, defeated (put out to pasture perhaps), who to watch and what we can hopefully look forward to in the future.

The Observer will be commenting on each individual race, and offering some suggestions for what needs to take place in the next couple of weeks and in the future.

Congratulations people, for the most part, you have prevailed, and now we all have something to look forward to.

How many of you thank God that we live in a country where we can have a say in who our elected leaders are ?

When people complain to me about political/government issues, the first thing I ask them is, do you vote ? If they say no, then their concerns fall on deaf ears.

I voted today.

I excercised my right.

My vote counts too.

So does yours.

If you failed to vote today, then by all means, make sure you vote in November, or register to vote.

Make your voice heard too.

The Primary Wins Should Go To...

So, I was asked for my predictions on tomorrow's Primary Elections.

Not that my opinion matters to anyone or that this site could possibly influence most in their voter choices, but I will comment as follows on the various races:

OLDHAM COUNTY JUDGE/EXECUTIVE

The obvious choice is current 2nd District Magistrate DAVID VOEGELE-R.

A new vision, a listener, a voice for everyone, ethical and conservative with our tax dollars...that is Mr. Voegele. He is what this county needs to move us forward.

Paula Gish-R is NOT the person to lead this county forward at such a critical time.
Electing her would simply be rubber-stamping the status quo...and Oldham County needs fresh ideas and leadership...not a contuniuation of the past and present.

MAGISTRATE - District 1
STEVE CHURCH-R should be given a second term.

MAGISTRATE - District 2
Uncontested race
WAYNE THEISS-R wins with no opposition to fill Mr. Voegele's seat come January.

MAGISTRATE - District 3
TIMOTHY SMITH-D should be given the opportunity to serve come November.
The current occupant, Bob Leslie-R, speaks little and offers nothing new lately to voters. This is one race where change could be a good thing.
NOTE: I have ammended my thoughts on this race, as I erred yesterday in saying that Magistrate Leslie had voted for various tax and fee increases. The Observer will admit when he is wrong, and I humbly apologize to Mr. Leslie. I had various sources of information and simply took from the wrong set of notes/sources when commenting originally. I applaud the reader who commented to me and pointed out my mistake. While I publish all comments (unlike another particular blogger), and have only found reason to censor a very select few, I am not publishing the comments in this case, since they came from an "Annonymous" reader. Let the record show that I have corrected my mistake and have apologized publicly.

MAGISTRATE - District 4
STEVE GREENWELL-R should be returned for a third term.

MAGISTRATE - District 5
IVA DAVIS-R wins over "assault boy" J.D. Sparks-R.
No real choice here, Davis is lackluster at best, votes for every tax and fee increase, and Sparks, well, people that plead guilty to even misdemeanor assault charges have no business serving on our Fiscal Court.

MAGISTRATE - District 6
KEVIN ELDRIDGE-R is the obvious choice over current incumbent and ticket seller Scott Davis-R. Davis now has enough troubles to keep him preoccupied for some time, and has been exposed for what he really is. Voters in the 6th District should send Davis packing, back to his "luxury" condo in Indiana ! Eldridge should face RICK GARLOCK-D in November.

MAGISTRATE - District 7
BOB DYE-R should end the political career of Rick Rash-R, thanks to the voters of the 7th District. Enough is enough already of this self-proclaimed "marrying magistrate" who says "My work improves life in Oldham County". (The Courier-Journal, 2010 Primary Voter Guide, 5-16-10) Yes, Rash also has voted for every tax and fee increase, thinks it's funny to tell jokes during meetings, and has apparently forgotten what it really means to serve ALL of the people in Oldham County, not just the developers and those who contribute to his campaigns. Dye should face SHERI BETZ-D in November.

MAGISTRATE - District 8
MICHAEL LOGSDON-R should also end the political career (thanks to the voters) of another long serving member of Fiscal Court, Bob Deibel, Jr.-R. A fresh face is sorely needed on Fiscal Court to represent this district. Mr. Logsdon actually was out campaigning this past weekend, walking door to door, talking and listening to voters about their concerns. Thank you for your many years of service Mr. Deibel, but change in this district is needed...fresh ideas, enthusiasm and most of all, knowing when to step aside and let others carry the torch forward.

COUNTY ATTORNEY
JOHN FENDLEY-R, the incumbent faces Galen Clark-R to see who goes up against STUART ULFERTS-D in November. Fendley will most likely win, and I'll make my November choice laster in the year.

COUNTY CLERK
Easy call here, former County Clerk GENA HARRISON-R should defeat her old co-worker and current clerk Julie Barr-R. Change is needed in the Clerk's office.

COUNTY JAILER
Voters should return incumbent MIKE SIMPSON-R to serve another term over challenger David Harper-R. Mr. Simpson has served this county well for many years.

COUNTY SHERIFF - Incumbent STEVE SPARROW-R
COUNTY CORONER - Incumbent BRETT DONNER-R
COUNTY SURVEYOR - Incumbent DAVID GARBER-R
are all unfortunately, unopposed in the Primary and as of now, in November.

COUNTY P.V.A.
J. ALBERT HARRISON-R should end the nepotism practices and arrogance of incumbent Ron Winters-R. Whether that happens remains to be seen, and there is no current opposition in November. While current PVA Winters went to bat and prevailed for hiring family, what does that really say about professionalism in an elected office ?

So, there you go, for those inquiring minds. My thoughts and comments on this year's Primary Elections. I hope and pray that four years from now, that every single race in Oldham County sets up for a contested November race in 2014. It's time for the Republican chokehold on Oldham County government to come to an end. There is a reason we have a two-party system (alledged tea baggers notwithstanding)...to give voters a choice in their representation. So, for many of us, we'll have to apparently tough it out for another four years.

Regardless of your views, do the right thing tomorrow if you're a registered voter...GO VOTE !
Your vote matters.
It's your chance to have an input in your government.
Make your voice heard.
If you don't vote, then don't bitch about the state of affairs in your community, state or country.
Do your homework, study the candidates and issues...and GO VOTE !

God bless Oldham County, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and this great country of ours, the United States of America !

Now, just to be clear to everyone:

In the past, I have been accused of setting up this blogsite to promote David Voegele, and it was even stated that he was behind this site. Nothing could have been further from the truth !

First of all, I am a proud registered Democrat and can't even vote for him until November.

Secondly, it has been alledged in the past that we knew each other. Again, not true.

About three weeks ago, I was traveling down Highway 146 back into Crestwood, and happened to see Mr. Voegele sitting on the side of the road in his truck, with campaign signs promoting his race. I pulled over, stopped my vehicle and walked over to him to introduce myself as an Oldham County resident and voter. (I surely hadn't seen Paula Gish out on the roadsides campaigning in my travels across the county.)

He spent about a half hour talking with me about various topics and issues, and when we parted ways, I became even more convinced that he is the ONLY choice to lead Oldham County into the next four years.

Let me be clear, that meeting was our first encounter of any kind. And yes, for the inquiring minds, I did reveal myself as "The Oldham Observer" to him late into our friendly conversation.

How nice that he took the time to listen to me, before the "reveal", answered my questions, and all the time, he knew upfront that I am a registered Democrat and couldn't even vote for him until November.

We discussed other topics as well, outside the scope of the issues, and I found Mr. Voegele to be a man I would feel very confident in leading our county and moving things forward. It's also nice to know that he has steadfastly refused any campaign contributions from developers.

Mr. Voegele has riled some folks up over the past 3-1/2 years on Fiscal Court, and rightfully so. He has spoken time and time again for the "regular" people of Oldham County, opposed tax and fee increases on us all, and asked the tough questions, even in the face of being outnumbered by the "old school" Republicans on Fiscal Court. His attitude and demeanor bode well for our future.

He is highly qualified to lead our county...and here's hoping that tomorrow, the Republicans in this county will make the right choice, and move Mr. Voegele from his seat on one far end of the courtroom to the center seat.

PAULA GISH...The Hatch Act

PAULA GISH, the Oldham County Deputy Judge/Executive until she resigned effective last Friday, still wants your vote tomorrow (May 18th) in her Republican primary race for Oldham County Judge/Executive against current Magistrate David Voegele.

Let's just cut to the chase here...knowing the same situation was brought up and ruled on in Kenton County earlier this year, Gish should have resigned months ago from her position, or withdrawn from the race. You can't have it both ways.

This in NOT the kind of "leadership" we need to move Oldham County forward.
Tomorrow, our Fiscal Court will be presented her resignation and will be asked to approve it.
Assuming she loses the primary, how fast do you think she'll be rehired ?
Anyone want to speculate if she's even cleaned out her office/desk and turned in her keys and county ID ?

Sounds like a power grab to me...keep earning a salary and benefits (that we pay for) while waiting on a ruling that you knew was going to come down against you. So much for for winning some silly "Best County Official" contest recently. A mere popularity contest, much as it is when running to be the President of a school's P.T.A. !

Oh yes, and Paula, you've NOT been the deputy judge/executive for the past four years as you claim on your campaign materials. Why, it hasn't even been 3-1/2 years yet that you've held the job. If you can't be honest in your advertisements, how can we expect total honesty in the future ?

Let's hope that the voters in Oldham County recognize that voting for Paula Gish is asking for a continuation of "business as usual" in Oldham County government.

SCOTT DAVIS...Got Tickets ?

Current 6th District Magistrate SCOTT DAVIS:

Suddenly nowhere to be found at recent Fiscal Court meetings, oh my !

Without going into all the details, since he's been all over the news lately, and there are plenty of reliable news sources (various links below) to learn the backstory here, let's just state the obvious:

Scott "Ticket Broker" Davis is not what he has made himself out to be to anyone in Oldham County. He has (or was) once again campaigning on his promoting "open and transparent" government...and now we all know he is/was talking/campaigning out of both sides of his mouth.

In the special section "A Guide to the Polls" published in April by The Oldham Era, he submitted the following information:

When asked for his employment history, he replied: "chemical engineer and consultant".

How convenient that he left out that he is (or was) a ticket scalper/reseller for sporting events. Yes, you're a ticket scalper when you set up shop in Indiana to resell tickets to avoid the practice in Kentucky, where such activity is illegal ! So, he failed to divulge ALL of his sources of income to us, and he operates websites that he has gone to great lengths to hide his ownership of. Wonder how long it will take the revenue departments of Indiana and Kentucky, as well as the Internal Revenue Service to come knocking at his door ? Scott Davis is NOT what he appears to be, and no "cheerleader" of his can change the facts or spin this any other way. If you want to resell tickets, fine. Do it legally, with integrity and admit to us all that you do.

When asked the following question, "What accomplishments are you most proud of during your term in office?" he began his reply with "Promoting an environment of open and transparent government."

Well, now we ALL know that he practices the "do as I say" attitude and "not what I do" when it comes to his politics. He has, regardless of the outcome of his current "ticket selling" messes, brought this all on himself and now he needs to do the right thing...resign from Fiscal Court immediately ! He goes out and hires Thomas Clay, a top criminal attorney in Louisville, files a lawsuit against a member of the U of L basketball coaching staff (he loves filing lawsuits, doesn't he?), and his political advertisements have disappeared over the last two weeks in both The Oldham Era and The Courier-Journal "Neighborhoods" sections. Maybe this is a sign that he recognizes the handwriting on the wall ?

Taken from the various stories, he alledgedly owns a luxury condo at The Harbours in Jeffersonville, IN, owns a $3 million dollar company, yet had his Oldham County home in foreclosure last year ? Is this really the kind of person you want to give another four years to on Oldham County Fiscal Court ? I think not.

Oh my, what will his "cheerleaders" / "defenders" do now ?

His "15 Minutes of Fame" (or Shame) are up !

The Observer sees Kevin Eldridge winning this primary contest May 18th in a potential landslide.

The Observer Returns...

Yes folks, after a very long and overdue absence, I have returned, just in time for the Primary Election tomorrow, May 18th.

Thanks for the emails of support over the past few months...and without going into details, many things kept me from restarting this blog, but now, more than ever, it is my honest intention to be active once again and provide my thoughts and publish your comments on the things that affect us all here in Oldham County.

Sometimes even the best laid plans or intentions can get sidetracked, and that's what happened to me. I want to be taken seriously and want to offer everyone a vehicle for their voices to be heard as well (unlike some other bloggers in this county)...when you respond to my observations on various topics.

That being said, and without further ado, let's leap back into the thick of things, because a blogger at this time couldn't ask for more to comment on, given all that is going on in Oldham County government and politics !

It's Official...Sparks is in the Primary...for Now !

Checked the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance website last night, and found that the pride of the Oldham County GOP, J.D. Sparks, in now listed as a candidate for the 5th Magisterial District race in the Republican primary.
Unless someone challenges his fitness to even run for elective office, let alone serve, this should be an interesting primary to say the least.
I received a very well thought out email from a follower that is passionate about doing whatever it takes to defeat Sparks. This person, a military veteran, says that Sparks has brought shame to those who have and do serve this country by his actions documented in his assault on the LEO Weekly reporter last year at the Lincoln Day Dinner in Louisville.
The betting line here says that current Magistrate Iva Davis will soundly defeat Sparks in the primary, and send him back into the deep, dark shadows of politics that he emerged from.
So, I urge everyone in the 5th District to get out and vote AGAINST this egotistical candidate come May 18th, 2010.

More Bad Publicity for J.D. Sparks !

Seems that J.D. Sparks filing to run for the GOP nomination for the 5th Magisterial District seat on Fiscal Court (currently held by Iva Davis, who is also running for a second term) is sparking even more bad publicity for the Oldham County Republican Party's "bad boy" of politics !

Jake over at "thevillevoice" included a piece on his website called "Monday Morning Dept of Fancy Violent Candidates" yesterday (2-1-10). Wonder who he was referring to...?

Write a letter of apology to the good, non-violent people of Oldham County via say, The Oldham Era and end this train wreck you have created.

And just to be clear folks...I've never met Sparks and don't know him personally. However, he represents the negative side of politics and the people who want to participate or play the game. And that is something I will preach against over and over. Change needs to come to Oldham County, but certainly not the kind of change this disrespectful, menacing and violent man would bring. The truth, the facts, court records and the video evidence don't lie !

JD Sparks is back ! Run for the hills !

The nerve of some people...JD Sparks (pictured above), the pride of the Oldham County Republican party and "chief assaulter" for the annual Lincoln Day Dinner held in Louisville, has filed his candidacy papers to run against current Magistrate Iva Davis in the 5th District in May's primary !

Sit back and enjoy this ride folks...if there were ever someone not fit to hold ANY public office, it's surely this loose cannon. Listed below are several links to either refresh our memories of this egotistical man, or for those not aware, the links will educate you about this candidate. And all of this took place just last year. Therefore, he can't get off by explaining that he was young back then and hadn't grown up yet. This man is a discredit to anyone seeking to truly serve in public office to do the people's business. Why, I would never vote for this poor excuse of a candidate if he were running for the position of "Dog Catcher", if Oldham County had such a post.

The Assault:
JD Sparks, thinking he's somebody of importance, verbally attacks and physically assaults LEO Weekly reporter Jonathan Meador who was a credentialed member of the media attending the event.

Legal Action:
Along with Meador's accounting of the incident to the Jefferson County Attorney's office, and the video he shot of the incident (which can be found in the links provided below), Sparks had criminal charges placed against him.

The Result:
JD Sparks ended up pleading guilty in court to a "Disorderly Conduct" charge, paid a $250.00 fine, plus court costs, and an order was placed against him barring him from communicating with Meador, his family and friends, and LEO Weekly. Furthermore, the charge will remain on his record for five years.

One more thing...is this a personal vendetta between JD Sparks and myself ?
No. I've never met the man, and frankly, don't care to.
I have nothing personal against the man, but I certainly don't want his hotheaded type being an elected official doing the "people's business" in the county that I proudly call home.
However, this is one person who should be exposed for what he is, and this rather shameful act on his part shows a segment of what's wrong with politics today...those people who look down on others and are arrogant, rude, sometimes violent and most of all, apparently not level headed.

And a real "watchdog" would tell us everything !

*I shall disclose here and now, that while JD Sparks did indeed file his candidacy papers to run in the primary, they have not been certified and posted by the Kentucky Election Registry as of this posting. There are usually delays between the time candidates file with the County Clerk and when they appear on the Registry's website.

**As of 3:00PM, February 1, 2010, the Kentucky Election Registry website is still not showing that Sparks has registered to run. Will be checking daily to let everyone know once his papers have been approved, although there could (should) be some question in light of his guilty plea last year.

Reviewing our current Fiscal Court

The deadline to file for county wide offices has come and gone as of 4:00pm yesterday, and contrary to some folks, I did not create this site originally to set myself up to run for any public office at this time. (And I just read that same sentiment on the "other" blogsite here in Oldham County, you know, the one that so graciously referred to me last year as "Casper the Not-So-Friendly Ghost !)

That being said, now would be a good time to review our current Fiscal Court and offer up comments on each member as we head full steam into this election year cycle. Once all candidate filings have been posted on the Kentucky Election Registry website, and we learn more about the them, I'll begin sharing my observations about each candidate and especially the few (unfortunately for us) contested races that we voters in Oldham will have to make choices about this spring and fall.

COUNTY JUDGE / EXECUTIVE - DUANE MURNER - R

Former Magistrate and serving his first term as our County/Judge Executive.
Has chosen not to seek another term, and has endorsed his Deputy Judge/Executive Paula Gish for his seat on the Court.
First three years have been marked by some controversies, lawsuits, catering to developers and what some call, a heavy-handed approach to managing the county, our tax dollars and the employees of Oldham County government.
Only time will tell in his last year in office if he can repair his perceived negative reputation to many, or do something that may cement his legacy in this county.
It is rather sad that someone with his education, business background and past service to the Court would have a term filled with so much controversy. Spending so much time pushing ahead an agenda to increase the tax burdens on the everyday folks of Oldham County, beyond anyone's expectations. Catering to developers and friends, settling lawsuits, behind the scenes dealings and most of all, doing his part to censor the voices of residents. Four minute limits on public comments during Fiscal Court meetings, and from what I've been told, trying to get him on the phone to discuss an issue is nearly impossible, unless you're on his "list".
Thank you for your service so far Mr. Murner, and let's see what you can do in your final year in office to make positive changes for ALL residents of Oldham County.

1st District MAGISTRATE - STEVE CHURCH - R

A very pleasant surprise in his first (originally appointed) term on the Court. Watching the Fiscal Court meetings, I think of him as maybe the most level-headed and conscientious member of the current Court. A tireless worker in finance and seemingly very fair and open minded in all matters before the Court. Brings an obvious business savvy mind to his approach to doing the "people's business"...and that is appreciated greatly.

2nd District MAGISTRATE - DAVID VOEGELE - R

Ending his first term on the Court, since he is giving up his seat to run in the Republican party primary for County Judge/Executive.
Also, a very conscientious member, and a straight shooter. Maybe he's had his moments of grandstanding, but at the end of the day, this Court needs someone to speak for those other members may choose to ignore. Consider him the "little people's" champion in many cases. I for one, appreciate someone who will raise questions and issues, and not roll over and play dead or tag along with others. Should be an interesting primary to say the least.

3rd District MAGISTRATE - ROBERT LESLIE - R

A quiet member of the Court who simply seems to go with the flow with the man in the big chair. Some would wonder what he has actually accomplished for his district and the county as a whole...the same as another court member (see District 5). No disrespect is meant here, but the quiet ones leave one to wonder just how effective and responsive the said magistrate is. Are you simply continuing to collect a paycheck from us, or are you being an effective elected official ?

4th District MAGISTRATE - STEVE GREENWELL - R

My second choice for a "no-nonsense" approach to representing people, along with Steve Church. Involved, active, clear cut, concise in his comments and apparently responsive to his district. Also takes a business approach to matters before the Court and doesn't drag issues out. Seems to care about issues and doing for the most part, what is right for the entire county.

5th District MAGISTRATE - IVA DAVIS - R

There are meetings where one wonders if she's active at all. Once again, a Court menmber who says little and seems confused on various issues. Simply put in my opinion, a seat warmer...enough said.

6th District MAGISTRATE - SCOTT DAVIS - R

A young, inexperienced first-termer who seems more interested in drawing attention to himself with some of his antics over his first three years, and his endless, and I do mean endless times of tying the Court meetings up with his ongoing monolouges. His favorite phrase is "the fact of the matter is" and he seems to enjoy reminding us all that he is an engineer. Will give him credit for forcing some issues and disclosures, but his methods in some situations have left little to be desired or as some have said, a bad taste in their mouths (think neighborhood fliers). He has his supporters and his distractors alike. He needs to begin to really think through his battles, and maybe quit letting others influence him so much. Oh, and his self-proclaiming website is so outdated and comes off as rather egotistical !

7th District MAGISTRATE - RICK RASH - R

Approaching 16 years on the Court. Comes off as very cavalier many times, thinks religious jokes are funny during meetings and seems more interested in protecting his own image and reputation. Narrowly won reelection four years ago. Needs to be more serious minded when doing the people's business and quit promoting himself so much to those who are looking for someone to marry them. Needs to focus on what his true place on the Court is, serving his district and all residents of Oldham County...not just a select few.

8th District MAGISTRATE - BOB DEIBEL - R

The almost 20 year veteran of Fiscal Court has long been of service to this county and his district. While some think it's time for a change in his district, he has been a faithful servant to all. However, he has offered some petty ordinances recently and seems content to just go with the flow. Maybe it is time for a change in this district and have a fresh face, new ideas and new energy. Sometimes, complacency sets in with length of service.

So, there you have it, my initial observations of our current Fiscal Court members early into this election year. I encourage residents to follow the Fiscal Court meetings on Channel 25, and then draw your own conclusions about not only your Magistrate, but the entire body of the Court. As the year goes along, if you think we need change, make your voice heard:

phone calls and emails to your Magistrate or the Judge/Executive's office,
attending Fiscal Court meetings,
letters to the Oldham Era, etc.
Make your voice heard...loud and clear !
The changes we need so badly can come about by holding our elected officials even more accountable for their actions and of course, by how you vote in the primary and general elections !

It is not my intent to "attack" any member of Fiscal Court personally. These are just my musings on this current Court. And if the truth be told, I'm certainly not alone in some of my observations...what do you think ?

The Observer is Back !

Yes folks, it's been far too long since I last posted here...between family matters, work, other obligations and so forth, it has been a very busy few months for me.
However, it is election year, and I now feel the need to rededicate myself to this blog and welcome your input as well (unlike the alledged "Watchdog" who prohibits such interaction), and trust me, I have a lot to comment on.
Also, some other Oldham County based bloggers have ceased their efforts, and according to the emails I have been receiving, I struck some nerves, both good and bad when I joined in the fray. The encouragement from some of those emailers has made me realize still, that a clear, objective voice is needed (unlike those who seem to blog solely for the purpose of their own ego and their undying support of a particular Magistrate), and I once again hope to be one of those voices that calls it like I see it...simply put, my take on matters of concern to all Oldham County residents.
So, sit back, take a seat and hopefully you'll enjoy the ride !

The Return Is Near !

Greetings,

After an absence of longer than I wanted it to be, due to family, work and other ongoing obligations that prevented me from devoting the necessary time to this blog...I'm announcing my impending return.

I won't be further intimidated and/or threatened by certain individuals, groups or special interests in Oldham County!

Some of you will soon be called out...others dealt with through the legal system or whatever means necessary to put an end to the actions that have been directed towards me, my family and my home.

I'm coming back with a new perspective, and for some, a vengeance...and will be posting an initial explanation/response to some previous comments left here for me, and some of the emails I've received.

It amazes me, that in a land where our citizens have fought for and even given their precious lives for our freedoms, including the right to free speech, that some individuals feel the need to stoop to the levels that they have. Free speech is a God-given right in this country...and in this county...my county...the county I love to call home.

One need not agree with any or all of my past writings, but remember, I still have the right to report facts and post my observations and opinions...the same as anyone else. That is the basis of many blogsites.

It is now just past midnight, September 11, 2009...an anniversary date that this country should never forget. May those who lost their lives eight years ago, the victims and those that gave their lives responding...forever rest in peace and never be forgotten.

WRITER'S HIDDEN IDENTITY REFLECTS COWARDICE
He uses the word "cowardice" in his title for this posting. This coming from a man who refuses to allow comments or feedback on his own mouthpiece blogsite! While that is his right to organize his blogsite as he chooses, he obviously only wants his voice heard, and not the voices of those that may read his postings, and especially those that disagree with his pontifications. Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black ?

I was referred to the Oldham Observer web site today by a friend who wanted me to read a particular article about someone whom I do not know, J.D. Sparks. While there I read a couple of more articles. However, I could not read for more than a couple of minutes as I was quickly becoming ill and there was no doctor in the vicinity.
Tell the truth Dewey, you may have been referred to my blogsite, but the "fact of the matter is", (to quote the favored saying of your buddy Scott Davis) and you know to be factual, you were first referred to this site by none other than myself ! I emailed you on February 28, 2009 when I began, and asked your permission to link your site on mine. We then exchanged emails on March 2 and 3, 2009. You gave me permission to link your site, offered some advice and wished me good luck. I still have the original emails...should I post them here to prove you lied about me and this site ? What credibility does that give you now ? JD Sparks is not the issue here and you know it. As for you "quickly becoming ill" while reading my site, get serious. Your attempt at humor fails you. The only one who needs to see a doctor at this point is yourself. You apparently have a problem with the truth and with your own ego.

Whoever runs the Oldham Observer is a COWARD, pure and simple. He hides behind a veil of secrecy while taking cheap shots at many other people. He has admitted that he is afraid to make his identity public. It is for that reason that you do not find a link on this web site to his site. I have no use for people who speak ill of other people while being afraid to give the other people an opportunity to criticize them. He would probably respond to this statement by saying that people can comment on his site. However, it is difficult to criticize a ghost who is afraid to open himself to criticism.

In our email exchanges, I explained my reasoning for remaining anonymous at this point, and you offered your advice and comments on my reasoning. Call me a COWARD Dewey, but YOU are the one who REFUSES to allow your follower's voices (pro or con) to be heard on your site, unlike here. I'm not taking cheap shots at anyone, no more so than you do, and the written (your own postings and letters to the editor) and recorded spoken word (you at Fiscal Court meetings) does not lie. I did not say I was afraid to make my identity public at this time. I said at this time I'd rather remain anonymous to protect my family and property. I have been more intimately involved in politics and government than you my friend, and I know how low some will stoop to in local politics (JD Sparks comes to mind when he attacked Jonathan Meador) to exact their revenge on someone for whatever reason. Remaining anonymous for now is my decision and people can choose how they view me on that issue alone if they want to. However, it can't be denied that I speak not only the truth about matters, but judging by the hits this site gets and the email I receive, I must be doing something right. Going against the established, entrenched "powers that be" and their supporters can be a good thing. And lest you forget, the purpose of a blogsite is for the owner/writer to report on facts as they see fit, and share their observations and opinions about a variety of topics. Sometimes Dewey, the truth simply hurts those that the arrows are being flung at. I don't need a link to this site on yours. My site visits are climbing, more than I anticipated. I've hit a new nerve in this county. I'm new and refreshing compared to you in the blogworld. I don't endorse people, conspire with people or tear them down the way you do. You're becoming old news around here apparently. If someone thinks, such as you, that I speak ill of others, at least they can comment here, unlike when you attack and refuse people the chance to defend themselves or comment on your blogsite. Seems to me that so far, those that have wanted to criticize me here on this site have, and have no problem doing so. I'm okay with that. So, bring it on. Me, a ghost ? Because this site follows the format of being ghost-written for now ? Many books are ghost-written. And some seem to care less whether or not they know who I really am at this point. But I'll tell you this, when the big reveal comes, I welcome you to continue to attack me along with others, because at that point, I won't back down or roll over and go away. I am here to stay !

The column regarding Sparks was more of an attack on the Republican party than it was a critique of any event.. The party has no control over the people who choose to become Republicans just as the Democrats have no control over who joins their party. By the way, the editor, and I use that term loosely, has said that he is a democrat. I wonder if he has ever been in Fiscal Court or at any other government function in Oldham County.
Sparks needed to be called out for what he is...a lowlife, thugging, egotistical political bigshot wannabee. What's wrong with that ? The video of the encounter does not lie. You and no one else can change what he did. And yes, his actions and disregard for others does to a degree represent the mindset of many, not all, people in the Republican Party. From his actions, to your close-mindedness about many things, that is what people judge a party on. That doesn't make it right, but that's how many people think. Examples my friend: Paul Patton was a disgrace to the Democratic Party, Ernie Fletcher (who as it turned out, I mistakenly voted for) an embarrassment to the Republican Party, Mitch McConnell as an obstructionist in the new federal administration, Jim Bunning as the loose mouth cannon of the Republican Party, Anne Northup riding Bush's coattails, David Williams thinking he is right all the time and loves to tax us to death, and has no problem spending tax dollars to lavishly furnish his state office...the list goes on and on...especially for Democrats and Republicans alike, but mostly for Republicans.

Oh yeah, and Dewey, you call me an "editor" of this blogsite which is true, and say you "use the term loosely"...well, I do have a background in journalism, have been the editor of both my high school and college newspapers, and well as other forms of media over the years (it's a fmaily thing I suppose, three generations now)...have you ? And yes, I have attended Fiscal Court meetings and various events in and around Oldham County...kind of drives you and some others crazy that you just can't pinpoint who I really am. Sort of like "Casper the Friendly Ghost" I'd say. I just don't have an ego that needs to be stoked, nor do I need to call attention to myself...I'm just not that vain. But I can tell you this, I am more comfortable with a microphone that you are sir, I don't need one as a bully pulpit, and I can and usually do work without notes or prepared text. Plus, I can be very entertaining ! Keep your eyes open, you just never know when we may be at the same event, meeting or function.

Yes, I am "unfriendly" at times, when I feel it necessary, but I am not the one that has a reputation for maliciously attacking others by way of the written or spoken word. That seems to be your specialty. You already have a history, well documented for all to see. It hurts to be called out sometimes, doesn't it ? I can mix fact with opinions, observations and humor. I can sling arrows, and I can heap praise on those as I see fit when warranted in my opinion. I'd like to think that I am more of an "equal opportunity" blogger. At least I admit to being a registered Democrat who votes each race, each election, with his conscience...for the person I feel will do the best job for the office they are seeking, regardless of their party registration, sex, religion, sexual orientation or ethnicity. Dewey Wotring...Your record from your own blogsite, meetings, letters to the editor and so forth do not paint the best picture of yourself.
Dewey Wotring...Stands before a Oldham County Board of Education meeting in August 2008 to object to an increase in taxes that benefit our schools. Said it wasn't fair to him to have to pay more when he has no children in the system. It takes a village to raise a child, and we are all that village for the children of Oldham County. How narrow minded are you really ?

Dewey Wotring...Accuses me of trashing people on this site...yet he has trashed County Judge/Executive Duane Murner (secret donations and open meetings, even proclaiming at a Fiscal Court meeting that "you hate me"), Magistrate Steve Greenwell over the airport fiasco, then he flip-flopped, Magistrate David Voegele whenever he gets the chance over anything, Magistrate Rick Rash for being Rick Rash, PVA Ron Winters and others. On the other hand, your obvious admiration for Scott "the fact of the matter is..." Davis is never ending. Give me a break !

Finally, there are comments about me on this site (obviously) and others, and that's fine. I'm a adult and can handle it and will repsond when I feel it is necessary. If one really wonders who I am, just take this into consideration...I have slowly and purposely dropped little hints throughout this site already...kind of a game I'm enjoying, teasing and making people wonder. And no, my name is not Bill as some have thought. I have nothing to hide for now, except my real name. My choice...deal with it.

Greetings everyone...yes, it's been awhile since my last posting...life has just been plain hectic lately...work, entertainment events and family obligations...which trump everything else.

So, it's back to work here and hopefully I can get everything on my docket posted here this week and see what kind of words will begin to fly !

Of course, I am referring back to the JD Sparks bully issue that took place a few weeks ago when he assaulted a writer for LEO Weekly. As of this writing, no formal charges have been filed against Sparks yet. LEO Weekly Editor Stephen George assures me he will let me know once he and Jonathan Meador (the victim) have been notified by the Jefferson County Attorney's office what, if any charges will be brought against the thug wannabee.

In originally writing about this incident, I sent an email to Anne Gerstein, who is listed on the Oldham County GOP website as the county party chair.

First of all, thank you for at least replying to my inquiry. I must say that I am however, very disappointed in the tone of your reply. My name at this point is totally irrelevant to the inquiry.

You were being asked as the "official spokesperson" of the Oldham County GOP to respond regarding the issue of J.D. Sparks and his role in the local party, in light of the apparent assault he clearly (the video record does not lie) inflicted upon a credentialed reporter this past Saturday.

There are any number of bloggers out here who cover politics and government in Oldham County, and I'm certainly not the first or only one to maintain a sense of privacy. This holds true, especially since one of the other Oldham County bloggers has identified himself and had property damage and vandalism due to (in his own words) his blogsite and what he has had to say.

I am not "anonymous" per se. I've put a lot of information about myself out on my blogsite, but have chosen for personal reasons to remain "anonymous" at this point. You need to understand, that I come from a political family, have run for and held elective office and know all too well the levels that some people will stoop to in local politics. I have a family and a home to protect. After all, Kentucky is infamous for such action.

But, to answer some of your questions, yes, I am a resident of Oldham County, and have been for over 14 years. I am a registered Democrat, but vote my conscience in each individual election. In the past, I have voted for Tim Feeley, Rebecca Jackson and Ernie Fletcher (what a mistake that turned out to be) to name a few Republicans I've supported.

However, I must tell you that in my humble opinion, your answer sounds arrogant to me, much like the voices of many Republicans these days. You're certainly entitled to answer as you see fit, however, I think you'll be feeling pressure from clearly identified sources (personal and media) in the near future to comment on the matter regarding J.D. Sparks. Surely, you can see the wisdom in divesting yourself and your party from this man and his actions.

In the end, all I was asking for was an official comment on the matter and his status within the Oldham GOP. I must be wrong then, thinking that I was asking too much from your party.

So, there you have it...a simple request for a comment about the JD Sparks issue and his ties to the local party and a lame excuse for not commenting by Ms. Gerstein. Boy, she represents the Republican Party well in Oldham County. Her smug attitude is typical of many elitest sounding Republicans. I don't know her, have never met her, but bet she is just as embarrassed as everyone else must be in her party at the actions of one underling. She should have done the right thing and answered my inquiry with real answers, and not sidestepped the issue at hand.

My money says that not one single Republican that may seek elective office next year will want JD Sparks anywhere near their campaign. As for you Ms. Gernstein, the JD Sparks issue will not roll over and go away as you hope it will. You would be well served to take down all mention of him on your website.

Democrats and sensible Republicans alike can recognize a political liability...JD Sparks is an embedded thorn in the side of all Republicans now. Whether you like it or not, guilt by association still exsists in this country, and it would be wise for the Oldham County GOP to disavow themselves of this hot headed, egotistical bully.

Brace yourselves here...because this is going to turn out to be a very long posting by me, both responding to the "Comments" section of the posting below "Weekend Update and What's To Come" dated May 15, 2009, along with an explanation of a few other things. So, sit back, and get ready to read on...

Today is Memorial Day, the most somber of all of the U.S.A.'s national holidays. To every service member who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country, in any conflict, thank you for your willingness to protect us and give your life for us and the freedoms that we enjoy. To those serving today and those who are retired from military service, thank you so much for what you do for us and what you have given. We live in a nation that gives us the right to free speech to this day still, thanks to each and every one of you. Our nation is grateful for your service.

Well, as it turned out this past week and holiday weekend, I was not able to spend the time I wanted to and post on the above mentioned topics...most are currently in draft form, and I promise, they will be coming soon. But, like most of us, I work for a living...five days a week, sometimes with overtime situations and there are times when travel is required. So, it's turned out to have been that kind of week and weekend for me. I'm disappointed in not posting, but between work, my family (which always comes first) and other things going on...time simply ran out on me.

I'm also in the entertainment industry, and have spent the past three nights (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) working at the French Lick Resort Casino in Indiana. So, as you can see, my life has been very hectic lately and my day job and entertainment gigs have me booked solid all the way through the middle of June. However, I will do my best to complete the above mentioned postings and get them online soon.

With the weekend I've just finished up, and on this, our nation's most somber national holiday, Memorial Day, I just couldn't help but respond to what all has taken place in the "Comments" section of the previous posting. And trust me, I have a lot to say.

Having said that...let me clear up a few things right out of the gate:

I do NOT ever go back into this blog and post comments as "Anonymous" !

Every posting is from me, and every comment I make is so noted that it's me.

I do not censor anyone unless they use vulgar language (that I think crosses the line), unless they cross that line or repeatedly post the same comments over and over, or are obviously getting into the areas of slander or libel.

This is MY blogsite, and I welcome comments and think that it is only fair to allow feedback from my readers, fans and dissenters, Republicans and Democrats alike.

So, to address some of the above mentioned "Comments", I'm going to 'copy and paste' them here, and respond (in red text to them) section by section accordingly.

Hello Oldham Observer and readers, I'll have to say, that Sparks video is something else, it does show that bizarro world does still exist. Yes it is. Never heard of him up to that story coming out. Anyway, not here to really comment on him or any of your posts. We all post what we want to post and I still don't know why I do it, it's not like it makes a difference. ;-) It does make a difference in my opinion. Just look at the feedback we get at times. With that said and since my name has been brought up a few times as well as a mention about someone once trying to serve me an undercooked omelet I felt it was time for me to chime in.

(1) When I first started blogging about county government in late 2007 I was not sure what kind of response I would get if any at all, but just in case somebody did want to respond I wanted it to be only through the blog and not by kicking my dog or giving my family "the business"...nothing like that ever happened so I started using my real name. So I do understand that type of reason for choosing to post anonymously. The way I look at it now though, is if I am going to be writing about something I WANT folks to know I wrote it, that way if I got something wrong I can be called out on it, but if I got it right then maybe they will buy me a chocolate milkshake from DQ. For me, I want to have constructive dialogue with our elected officials whether we agree with each other or not. We all have our own styles. Yes we do Scott, and very well said, and there will come a day when I reveal my identity. Final comment on the whole anonymous posting thing...it really does not make sense, at least not to me to criticize someone who posts anonymously if you yourself sign the comment as anonymous. In other words...2 anonymous's don't make a right. ;-) Bingo !

(2) I have no proof at all that the undercooked omelet delivered to the front of our house was "retribution" over anything I wrote. I seriously doubt any of the folks I write about on my site could even fling an egg that far, well maybe one but heck...adults don't do that kind of stuff. That was nothing more than a random neighborhood kid thing. I remember about 8 years ago walking out front only to find that one of our trees had been TP'd and that was long before the word "blogging" was even in our vocabulary.

Just one other comment here...I orginally emailed Scott (we've never met) and told him about this site. I included a link to his blogsite on here, and he then linked mine. Then, for whatever reason, he removed the link, which is his choice. I gave the same courtesy to Dewey Wotring, and even though he is now attacking me, I have chosen to keep links to both of their sites here. I for one, strongly believe in free spreech, even if I disagree at times with the messenger. More people need to have their voices heard and none of us claim to be the "final word" or "authority" on any given posting...but at least we hopefully get people thinking about the state of affairs in Oldham County government.

Dewey, you've got a hell of a lot of nerve calling someone a coward when you won't even allow comments on your opinions on your web site. All you do is pontificate in a vacuum with no feedback published on your site. Extremely well stated and so true ! Maybe he should be referred to as "Dewey the Dictator" of Oldham County based websites and blogs ?

There is nothing stopping you from criticizing the editor of this site or any of the other anonymous posters. Whether you like it or not, it is common for political bloggers and the commentators to remain anonymous. You don't need to know who they are to criticize their ideas. Have at it. I just can't figure out why the hell it's that important to you. Perhaps because he is obsessed with promoting himself more than his ideas or pontifications...go look that one up Dewey. This country guarantees us free speech, whether you state your name or choose to remain (at this time) anonymous.

It is no badge of honor to identify yourself on a political blog and it doesn't make anyone's opinions or comments any more valid just because we know them by name. In fact, anonymous posting allows for not only a more interesting exchange but, in my opinion, a more revealing one. This anonymous commenter actually "gets it"... I love it !

Finally, for taking the guy who runs this site to task about whether or not he might ever go to a Fiscal Court meeting - - that's just ridiculous. You really think you're on some sort of high and mighty mission because you show up to spout off at every meeting? I have attended Fiscal Court meetings. However, I choose to not draw attention to myself. I've been much more involved in local government that Dewey could ever imagine. And one more thing Dewey, I've actually ran for and been elected to office before, just not in Oldham County. Have you ? Finally, I think Dewey is an angry man, and loves to perform for the camera. Trust me, the day I get up to address Fiscal Court, I won't need notes or a prepared text. I'm very comforatble with a microphone in my hand or in front of me. There's this new fangled thing, Dewey. It allows you to be in one place and see what goes on someplace else without actually having your body stuck in the same farty seat at Fiscal Court. It's called television. And, if you miss the meeting live, they play it over and over and over again. You can even download it from the internet. True statements my friend, but I'm beginning to think that Dewey just simply likes to watch himself on television, over and over and over...

I actually like you and your site, Dewey. I admit, I've followed his blog for some time, and actually, his blog was one of the reasons I started this one. He's obviously in the Scott ...the fact of the matter is... Davis camp, and the anti-Duane Murner camp, and frankly, his message gets old. He even stated (on television in fact) at a Fiscal Court meeting that he knows that Duane Murner "hates" him ! I get the idea that if that in fact is true (and I seriously doubt it), there are others that are sick and tired of his rants as well. Heck, I'm waiting for the day he rises up and challenges Duane Murner to a good old-fashioned Kentucky duel ! I just think you don't like criticism from any source, including anonymous political blogs. Obviously, in Dewey's mind, it's his way and no other way is right. It's a real laugh to see an anonymous post calling someone a coward for posting anonymously. And, so heavy on the "manly" aspect of life, right? What is it with you nut jobs who think you're so brave and strong and somehow weave that into your thoughts about male sexuality? What are you trying to tell us about yourselves? I thought about that too, then wondered if it fact, it was JD Sparks ? One never knows, and he's certainly not a fan of mine along with Dewey "no comments from my readers on my blogsite" Wotring.

I didn't expect Wotring to read the comments on this site. I intended it for the readers of this site. But, as I said, I can't post a comment on Wotring's site. No one can discuss Dewey's opinions pro or con on his site. We all know by now that Dewey is a dictator in his own mind. Anyone that promotes censorship as he does, deserves not to be heard, especially for four minutes at almost every Fiscal Court meeting. So, here I am. Glad you're here, and thank you. I've received lots of positive emails from people who like my take on many things, the fun I try to have and yes, even the splashes of color ! This site is not all about me. So, there you have it for now...thanks for letting me get my comments in...and thanks for reading this far. Finally, I'm not going to get into a war of words with Dewey Wotring or anyone else, here or anywhere else. Dewey has his lopsided site, and I have mine, which I'd like to think is much more open-minded and broad-based than he could ever hope for. I get the sense that he is an angry man. Maybe he is, and maybe he's not. I will let my followers know that I will be posting a very scathing response to his posting about me on his site...expect that in a few days. And then for me, it's on to much more important topics than Dewey Wotring and what he and his friends think.

I read with great interest the posting on May 11, 2009 on the pageonekentucky.com website about Oldham County's own JD Sparks.

Makes for great reading I must say...and the YouTube video that is included speaks for itself. To fully understand the nature of my comments, I suggest you read the stories and see the video for yourself before passing judgement on my thoughts.

So, it begs to be asked...does this egotistical Republican, a member of the Oldham County GOP, (listed on their website as the Resolutions Committee representative) really represent the GOP, or better yet, what's wrong with it? Especially in Oldham County?

Surely, there are Republicans all over Oldham County who are seething over this guy's rant against a LEO Weekly reporter who was credentialed and had a ticket and the right to attend the State Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner that took place this past Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Galt House in Louisville.

The reporter, Jonathan Meador had a right to be there and good ol' JD Sparks took it upon himself to accost Meador, a reporter simply doing his job. If this guy represents what the Oldham County GOP stands for, God help us all! He takes it upon himself to be a "cop" at the event, with no authority from anyone at the event...and attempts to kick Meador out of the event.

So, I guess this Pewee Valley resident thinks so much of himself that he can decide who should and should not be present at the Lincoln Day Dinner. As if he speaks for all Republicans! I think not, and bet that most Oldham County Republicans think not as well.

My suggestion, especially if LEO Weekly follows through and takes out criminal charges against Sparks tomorrow as they are indicating they will do...the Oldham GOP would be wise to divest themselves of this thug. He is a thorn in the side of many, and his ego has him blinded as to his importance to the party...which is greatly overinflated in my opinion. Bet his parents, wife and children are so proud of him now!

Which leads me to this conclusion...while it is true that many level headed public servants don't let party affiliation overtly affect their decision making process, there are some that are so blind that they see nothing but towing the party line on all issues as being the only way to do the people's business.

However, if the Oldham County GOP allows this type of behavior to go without consequences, then they too, are in trouble and are just as guilty of promoting a lack of tolerance for others. It is rumored that Sparks is considering a run for public office someday...let's hope not.

His employer website touts his accomplishments and education, and I hope that they too, reconsider his continuing employment. His juvenile Myspace, Facebook and his other websites paint a rosy picture of this bully, but the video shows us what type of person he really can be. Maybe he got caught up in the heat of the moment, but remember, he served in no official capacity at the Lincoln Day Dinner...he was just one of about 400 attendees. So, who does he think he is? Obviously, not someone near as important as he himself thinks he is.

JD Sparks...nothing short of an embarrassment to the Republican Party of Oldham County!

UPDATE: I commented on this story on the pageonekentucky.com website today after their story and link back to this posting appeared. I also received an email this afternoon from Stephen George, the Editor of LEO Weekly. First, he thanked me for my interest and take on this issue, and said that he mostly agreed with my thoughts. He also let me know that indeed, LEO Weekly will be filing criminal charges against JD Sparks tomorrow. I encourage my readers to read his print edition column when it hit newstands tomorrow and keep up with this ongoing saga as it plays out by visiting either:

As for responding to the first comment below...I've not spoken directly with LEO Weekly reporter Jonathan Meador, and I also know that others trying to get a comment from JD Sparks have been unsuccessful. While the segment of the YouTube video is clear, it was relayed to me that he was not alone in walking around the event with a recording device in hand. This has become a common practice at such events. Regardless of Meador's motives...there was not a policy of any kind at the event forbidding the use of such recording devices by anyone. My guess is that most video recording devices were there to record any possible fireworks between McConnell and Bunning...or Bunning's next rant. So, we'll see what all comes out in the criminal complaint when it is filed and then pass further judgement on the matter.

The Misguided Alarm Ordinance

False Alarms and Peddlers Oh My !

Going back to the March 17, 2009 Fiscal Court meeting...

One has to wonder how effective Magistrate Bob Deibel is anymore. He had taken it upon himself at a previous meeting of Fiscal Court to introduce both the "Peddler's" and "Alarm" ordinances.

Needless pieces of legislation on both counts. Ill prepared when it came time to discuss them both...since no hard facts were presented to the Court. Seriously, he stated that the Oldham County Police Chief Colonel Michael Griffin tells him that the OCPD makes and I quote from the meeting, "thousands" of false alarm runs every year and it's getting out of hand ! Really ? If he wanted to present the true facts, then he should have called upon the police chief to appear before the Court with documentation of his numbers. Furthermore, he repeatedly referred to the police department as the "OCD", and not the "OCPD".

Both pieces of legislation were passed with Magistrates Rick Rash, Bob Leslie and Scott "the fact of the matter is..." Davis voting against the "Peddler's" ordinance and Magistrates Steve Church, Scott "the fact of the matter is... Davis and David Voegele voting against the "Alarm" ordinance.

Thankfully, the "Alarm" ordinance has been called back for a revisiting and hopefully it will be eliminated from consideration...since both ordinances are little more than a way to further tax and impose fees upon the residents of Oldham County in one way or another.

I realize that Magistarte Deibel has served this county many years in various capacities, and don't doubt his love for Oldham County, but it is becoming more and more obvious that he is past his prime. No one wants to hear how things used to be done on the Court...this is now, not then and it's time for progressive leadership...not the same "good ol' boy" way of doing things in the past.

Let's hope he'll seriously considering retiring from the Court at the end of his present term and let some fresh faces and ideas be brought to the Court. Bringing matters before the Court and public, at the least require a Magistrate to be fully prepared with facts and sound reasoning for introducing legislation, whether it be a resolution or an ordinance.

It's the least a Magistrate can do for the public they were elect to serve.

Imagine, a 50-1 long shot wins, a horse purchased for only $9,500.00...how cool is that ?
It's compelling to see an underdog or small operation win something so large...makes it worthwhile to root sometimes for the "little guy" (not referring to Calvin Borel as a little guy in a negative sense, he's a great rider)...now, if only Oldham County Fiscal Court would always do the right thing by the "little guys and gals" of our beautiful county, instead of the "fat cats" and big donors to political campaigns, this would indeed be an even greater county to live in !

David Voegele vs Scott Davis - April 7, 2009

As promised, this is the first of several postings I had referenced previously that I would be addressing. It's been a busy week or so with work demands and the fact that we've had our Granddaughter for an entire week while her Mother was on vacation on a planned out of state trip...and keeping up with a 2-1/2 year old can be challenging at times...but we wouldn't had traded the experience for anything ! (We see her constantly and she spends one night a week with us, but an entire week was something else.) She went home to her Mommy today, and we miss her already!

OK, on to the fireworks, otherwise known as "Thunder Over Oldham County Fiscal Court" in keeping with the Derby spirit this time of year...

I've thought long and hard about what I wanted to say here regarding the events that took place during the April 7, 2009 Fiscal Court meeting between Magistrates David Voegele and Scott Davis. I've watched the broadcast several times on Channel 25 and online to get to this point.

"The fact of the matter is..."

Without going into all the details, since they have been fairly well publicized, there was an exchange between the two Magistrates regarding the lawsuit filed by Davis against County Judge/Executive Duane Murner and the other members of Fiscal Court over the Rawlings donation and the secret meeting issue.

"The fact of the matter is..."

Voegele was on target in his views as he addressed Davis and once again Davis danced around in his comments without ever giving a concrete answer. He refused to answer directly why he didn't bring his concerns to Fiscal Court over either issue before filing his lawsuit. He gladly voted to accept the Rawlings donation (anonymous at the time to all but Judge Murner), and he chose to stay for the entire alledged illegal meeting.

Mr. Davis, simply put, you can't have it both ways. You want to tout that you stand for transparent and open and honest government, but yet you refuse to answer honest and legitimate questions posed directly to you. You deny the public you serve and who pay your salary and benefits the opportunity to hear an honest answer.

You disrespected Voegele and the other members of the Court. You had opportunities to bring your concerns over these issues up in a public forum for all to see, but chose not to. I'm not saying that you were wrong in questioning the source (even at a later date) of the donation to the county, but you were dead wrong in how you then went about things. Same theory applies to the meeting issue. I think you still have a lot to learn about being a politician...and every elected official is a politician...some are even truly public servants. Which are you ?

All of this apparently was going to come to a head at some point, and even Voegele said he was going to address these issues during the "payables" section of the meeting, since the legal fees to the attorney for Davis were due and the court fines were also on the agenda to be approved by the Court and paid.

I believe all of this started earlier than it may have since someone who can now be best described as a "cheerleader" for Davis addressed the Court in the first "Public Comment" section, and brought up issues related to the lawsuit. Those comments sparked Voegele to respond and the showdown was on !

Davis claims that some members on the Court were "trivializing" the issues when in fact, he keeps telling them they are misguided and incorrect in their ways of thinking. Is that not a way to also "trivialize" someone else's comments ? Once again, you can't have it both ways. If they were so trivial to Davis at the time he voted to accept the donation and also remained in the meeting, what then took place to make "a mountain out of a molehill" as one Magistrate termed the whole episode ?

If this was indeed a calculated political move on the part of Davis, it has sadly backfired by now. While some will continue to defend him to the end, the bottom line is that the negative publicity will hurt him in the long run. There is always a learning curve in the world of politics, regardless of the size of the stage and people are going to remember this come the next election cycle.

"The fact of the matter is..."

Maybe Judge Murner didn't offer up an apology, and that's his decision. But he did reimburse the taxpaying citizens of Oldham County for the $2,600.00 part of the court decision for one half of the fees billed by Davis' attorney ($2,500.00) and the $100.00 fine regarding the Rawlings donation. For that, he should be commended. I take that as an apology and understand and respect his decision to keep his word to someone. And his letter to the editor in the Oldham Era, I have to assume was his way of addressing the issues.

As for the other half of the attorney fees and fine, also in the total amount of $2,600.00, I think it only right since the Court was ruled against that ALL nine members reimburse the county and the citizens in equal amounts. Seems fair to me.

During the first exchange, Judge Murner was wrong to call an end to it when he did. It should have continued playing out in the hope that Davis would have finally answered the questions he was being asked. And during the second exchange, Magistrate Steve Church was wrong to call for adjournment when he did. We as the taxpaying public have a right to hear every detail until there is a final resolution.

Also, I'd like to see a copy of the attorney's billing to the county on behalf of his work for Davis. $5,000.000 ? Seriously ? How about donating the fees back to the county and designate that it be used for a specific purpose, such as purchasing a K-9 dog for the police department, or adding playground equipment to a local park, etc?

Magistrate Rick Rash, comparing the whole secret meeting fine to jaywalking was out of line and his comments were uncalled for. These are indeed serious issues and smug comments are not needed. Your comments showed a lack of respect for the citizens of this county who paid the bill for you and your fellow Magistrates, and we deserve better than that. Maybe you're becoming more and more jaded and a bit too comfortable in your position. The circuit court decision should serve as a wakeup call to you and the others conduct the people's business in a fair and serious manner at ALL times. Since when did jaywalking issues come before Fiscal Court ?

Finally, I could say more, but will refrain at this time. Judging by the hits and page views this site has generated in a short amount of time, I'm sure to get comments and emails on my views in this particular posting, and that's fine. I treat each topic fairly and base it on facts, and "the truth of the matter" is, I'm getting tired of what I think are "cheerleaders" and "plants" to benefit any member of the Court.

I simply call them as I see them, my own take on things. I may be critical of a Court member during one posting, and complimentary in another. It's called true balance. I'm never out to disrespect, slander or libel any member of the Court or any other elected official...and I won't stoop to that level ever. But I will post my opinions and you may agree or disagree with me, which is your right...it's called freedom and democracy.

So, in case you've noticed an underlying theme here, I'm sick of hearing "the truth of the matter is..." during comments from Scott Davis surrounding this entire issue. The REAL truth of the matter is, he owes us, his public employers the answers to the following questions:

1 - Why did you, Magistrate Davis, stay in an executive session Fiscal Court meeting and then only challenge and sue your fellow Court members over it, after the fact, without first raising your concerns in an open court session ?

2 - Why did you, Magistrate Davis, not bring up your concerns to your fellow Magistrates and the public you serve over the anonymous donation after you first gladly voted to accept it in the spirit it was given in, after Judge Murner denied your open records request ?

Having stated the obvious, and the Fiscal Court video meeting records don't lie, you owe us answers. If you continue your own dance and end run around these issues and questions, then you are just as guilty of not serving the best interests of the citizens you were somehow elected to represent. Failure to be totally open, honest, transparent and accountable leaves you but one choice, resign from your office, because you truly are not standing for what you claim.

The truth hurts sometimes. Those who may be guiding you are steering you in the wrong direction (see former Governor Ernie Fletcher as an example) and you need to do what is right for all of us. So, this is your invitation to answer me, a taxpayer who helps pay your salary either by email or posting your answers on your personal website. Or better yet, since you were absent from the April 21, 2009 Fiscal Court meeting without explanation, make a statement to the Court and the citizens of Oldham County at the next Fiscal Court meeting.

As of now, your future in Oldham County politics is getting very cloudy...as is the futures of a few others...

Westport General Store...Food Heaven !

Last night, my wife suggested we were long overdue to make a journey out to Highway 524 and eat dinner at the WestportGeneralStore.com. It was going to be our first visit of the year, and are we ever glad we chose last night to go !

We left home and took the scenic route to arrive at Will Crawford's wonderful eatery. We took the backroads, eventually working our way over to Highway 42 out to 524. We chose to take the long way around 524 so we could see all of the beauty of nature coming into bloom for Spring and of course, ride by the Ohio River.

When we arrived, the parking lot was packed. We were greeted as welcome guests at the door, took a seat at the bar (to wait for a table) and surveyed the menu for our selections. We each ordered a drink from one of the servers and then Will (the owner) greeted us and took our appetizer selections.

We tend to be creatures of habit and the drive to Westport is always well worth it just for the:

Fried Green Tomatoes - Breaded and seasoned tomatoes served with smoked chiplote corn salsa $6

Sometimes we also order as appetizers in addition to the Fried Green Tomatoes the:

Baby Hot Browns - The local favorite! Toast points topped with fresh roasted turkey, creamy Mornay sauce, crispy bacon and vine-ripe tomatoes $8

However, on this visit we ordered only the tomatoes and noticed the change in the way they are prepared and served. We had asked Will about this and he took the time to explain it to us, and then he was off with our order. What an excellent choice once again !

Now, being creatures of habit when we eat out, we both decided to try something different from Chef Harold Baker's menu...and were we glad we did.

I ordered:

Chicken Breast Saltimbocca – Our Signature Dish! With thinly sliced Finchville country ham, provolone cheese, and fresh sage-lemon butter, served with "dirty rice" and seasonal vegetables $17

My wife ordered:

Eggplant Napoleon - Layered, breaded eggplant, with fresh provolone and chunky tomatoes, basil, and garlic sauce, served over Farfalle pasta with seasonal vegetables $14

We were both amazed when the plates were delivered to our table. The quanity, the presentation and the aromas were all impressive. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed our selections (even sharing our choices with each other) and in fact, my wife had to take a portion of hers home for leftovers ! Kudos to Chef Baker for a wonderful job once again.

During the course of our visit, we had excellent service, Will came by our table twice to check on us and the restaurant was a lively place to be on a Friday night. Simply put, another wonderful experience at Westport General Store.

We visit several times a year, often bringing others with us and especially enjoy bringing folks to experience the General Store for the first time. While I'm certainly not a restaurant reviewer by nature, I think it's important to tout places such as WGS so that others will maybe experience some of the wonderful local restaurants and businesses we have in Oldham County.

So, while this blog is mainly about Oldham County government, it is also about promoting the best of what Oldham County has to offer and Westport General Store is certainly worthy of recognition. So, if you've yet to experience what Will Crawford and his staff have to offer at WSG, you should make plans to visit soon and try it for yourself.

What a wonderful experience once again...thanks to Westport General Store !

Just a few random short thoughts for today...

I'd like to commend Magistrates Steve Church, Steve Greenwell and David Voegele (the members of the Fiscal Court Finance Committee) for their recent meeting with representatives of the Oldham County School Board regarding the annual $200,000 Dynegy payment to the school system. Magistrate Church reported back to Fiscal Court at the April 7, 2009 meeting that after their discussion with the school system folks, they could all support proceeding with authorizing the annual payment to the school system. Magistrate Church did an excellent job in explaining the circumstances to the Court and public, and for this, he should be commended.

Without going into all of the details, it's refreshing to see that an honest attempt was made to look out for the finances of county government. Credit to Magistrate Voegele for raising the issue and for their time in doing the necessary legwork to legitimize the financial arrangement and bringing to light the details for all to see. Wouldn't it be nice if Fiscal Court operated more like this all of the time?

Accurate Fiscal Court Minutes? I Think Not...

Oldham County Fiscal Court minutes are posted on the oldhamcounty.net website after they have been approved. Example: the minutes from the March 3rd meeting are read and approved (with or without corrections, modifications, etc.) at the March 17th meeting. Then they are posted on the website for all to read. That's great...except when the posted minutes are not accurate.

The Fiscal Court Clerk is Tina M. Schaaf. I would think that it is her ultimate responsibility to make sure that everything posted in the minutes is accurate and factual. Making the minutes available to the public via the web is part of openess that all governmental bodies should have. Making sure that the minutes are truthful about what all transpired during a session of Fiscal Court is paramont.

Case in point:

At the March 3rd meeting, there were two speakers during the first "public comment" session. They were Dewey Wotring and Karen Baughman.

The minutes posted on the website read as follows:

PUBLIC COMMENT: March 3, 2009 Page 235

Dewey Wotring, LaGrange
(concerns about the state of fiscal court)

Karen Baughman, Crestwood
(commended road dept for debris pickup efforts)

While both are true statements as to the nature of the topics they spoke of, there are vital compontents of their comments not conveniently listed for all to see.

Go back, watch the meeting again and see for yourself.

Mr. Wotring did address his concerns about the state of affairs in Fiscal Court. But he pointedly addressed the actions (or lack thereof) on the part of County Judge/Executive Duane Murner and the whole Rawlings secret donation issue. This qualifies as much more than just "concerns about the state of fiscal court".

Even further evidence can be found in this section of the posted minutes:

Judge-Executive Murner restated his position on the acceptance of the anonymous donation.

As for Ms. Baughman's comments, yes, she did commend the Road Department on their work efforts related to the storm cleanup, and encouraged them to take their time and keep safety in mind while performing their assigned tasks.

BUT, she also commended Dewey Wotring, Jim Pearson (director of the "No Oldham Airport" campaign) and Magistrate Scott Davis for their efforts that helped lead to the defeat the ill-advised general aviation airport issue.

So, you tell me, are the Fiscal Court minutes edited for publication on the web to not publish in greater detail negative opinions or comments that may have been directed at the Court, or an individual member(s) that the Court hears during the "public comment" sections of each meeting?

Get it right Fiscal Court...total openess and transparency and an accurate accounting of the people's business is a mandate before you. Live up to your duties and report to us ALL of the facts, not edited versions that soften the blow when the Court or a member(s) may be criticized or others are praised that do not sit on the Court.

Post a corrected version on the website, and listen closely during the meeting to Ms. Schaaf's reading of the minutes and insist that EVERYTHING be noted and recorded and posted as it happened. After all, the video record does not lie !

Why So Negative You Ask ?

Yes, it's been a bit over a week since my last posting, and sometimes that's just the way it goes. There is much more to my life than blogging...

I recently received an email asking me why I seem to be so negative...the truth of the matter is, there isn't a whole lot to be positive about when it comes to Oldham County Fiscal Court. I love this county, this is my home. I work, pay taxes and patronize many businesses in this county. I am the eternal optimist, the guy who always sees the glass as half-full, not half-empty. But the focus of my blog is to draw attention to issues that affect ALL Oldham Countians, not just the select few. And of course, this being a blog, I will always offer up my take on things. You don't have to agree with me, but know there is always relevance in what I opine about.

That being said, I want this county to grow slowly, with purpose, always doing what is possible to encourage the quality of life for us all and our children, grandchildren and visitors. Everyone should always have equal opportunities in this county, whether you are a homeowner, resident that is renting, a business owner or an employee of a company here in Oldham County. The days of government catering to the needs of a select few must end.

We have become a county of diversity with our people...change is good...and so is open and honest government. We as the citizens of this county should expect nothing less than complete transparency from our elected officials. The elected officals across the board should give us nothing less than their absolute best, without regard to political afilliations, favors, campaign donations large and small, area of residence, economic status, etc.

After watching Fiscal Court meetings on Channel 25, it is my belief that we have a few serious, dedicated and truly civic minded individuals representing us. We also have those that choose to grandstand, keep politics alive and healthy (especially if you are a Republican), tune out those that disagree with their views, sleepwalk through meetings, stumble as they speak and so on.

It is not my intention to point fingers at any one individual...but it may come to that at times. They must know that there are those of us who watch and observe and laugh at the pettyness that sometimes permeates the Court. I've been saying a reoccuring theme is "change is coming"...and I truly feel that in good time it will. Fiscal Court is in need of a dire shakeup and the 2010 cycle of elections can't get here soon enough.

To those of you that share my view that change is needed, do something about it in your own way. Get involved, email your officials when you have something to say, organize and support folks that would bring some common sense to the Court. And to those of you that disagree with me that change is severely needed, then you are part of the problem too, not the solution. Of course, most that would beg to differ or criticize me must be Republicans...after all, they pretty much control the county. Taking a good look at yourselves in the proverbial mirror might just do you some good.

But change is good sometimes, and needed. What we need next year is some truly Deomcratic representation, or even Independents. Anything but an across the board Fiscal Court made up exclusively of Republicans. It works in Frankfort and Washington...the two party system, and it can work here as well.

Yes, I am revealing that I am a registered Democrat...always have been, always will be. But, I take each election seriously and vote my conscience on who I think would do the best job for the seat they are seeking. I voted for former Governor Ernie Fletcher in his first run for the Governorship, thinking at the time he would bring healing to state government and that a change in the wind was sorely needed in Frankfort after the Paul Patton era. Ok, so that didn't turn out so well. However, I still to this day believe that every election is important and will continue to support the best candidates in my opinion, regardless of party affiliation. How many of you can say that with honesty?

So, get ready for a series of postings covering many issues and on a personal note, Happy 27th Birthday to my son today...I am so proud of you!

Tidbits and Thoughts

I've been very busy lately with work demands, March Madness and family matters. Thus, I've not had the time to post anything of relevance lately. However, I'm working on several topics that I'll be posting soon. One of the drawbacks to having your own blog, is not always having the time to devote to it that you'd like. I'd posted earlier that I had yet to have the time to watch the Fiscal Court meeting from March 17th on Channel 25, and so far, the best I've been able to do is catch parts of it. Hopefully, this weekend I can watch it from start to finish and then post my thoughts on the meeting.

Scott Hack from the website oldhamcountywired.com/ has notified me of a potential lunch meeting that he's invited various Oldham County bloggers to this coming Saturday, April 4th. If I can work my schedule out, I hope to attend and meet in person some of my fellow scribes. While we all come from different paths that have led us to create blogs/websites regarding Oldham County, I think it would be good to meet and create a dialogue between ourselves. Maybe then, we can each understand our various backgrounds, reasons for blogging, etc. Certainly, we won't ever all see eye to eye on various topics, and may disagree (sometimes strongly perhaps) on some issues, but hopefully we can all remain respectful of each other and the entitlement we have to voicing our opinions.

Since I am not affiliated with any county office holder (past or present), or potential candidate in the future, I want to once again clearly state that I have chosen to voice my opinions via this blog because I am sick of the state of affairs in Oldham County government, especially with Fiscal Court as a whole. The Republican-led domination of county government is damaging Oldham County. We are being taxed over and over, with no true consideration of the working people of this great county. Smug comments during Fiscal Court meetings, facial expressions and body language say a lot about those that sit behind the microphones during meetings.

There are members of Fiscal Court that need to step aside. We need a Fiscal Court inhabited by people with fresh ideas and a "think outside the box" mentality running things...because "business as usual" is creating a backlash that I hope will be felt at the polls next year. We need new and truly progressive leadership...not people in the pockets of developers and special interest types. Yes, it sounds like more political catch phrases, but it's the truth people. We need to unite and bring change to the way things are done.

The status quo has been steadily bringing this county to its knees. There are those of us who would rather see this county continue to grow slowly and properly, with fair guidelines for all and with a government that is open, honest, efficient and representative of all people, not just the select few.

Finally, congratulations to the U of L Cardinals...the men's team for making it to the Elite Eight and the women's team for advancing to the Final Four this weekend in St. Louis. The men's team showed class and poise all season and have set the bar high for next year's squad. The women's team has been an absolute joy to watch and here's wishing them the best this weekend.
It's a great time to be a Cardinal fan!

Regarding the 3-17-09 Fiscal Court Meeting

I have not had the chance to watch the 3-17-09 Fiscal Court meeting on Channel 25 yet this week, been a busy week so far. Have read comments on two other blogs, and the "vanilla" coverage by The Oldham Era. Due to what I have read so far, I am looking forward to watching the proceedings and then offering up my thoughts. Stay tuned...

One other thing...I am not a resident of LaGrange, but if I was, I would be absolutely appalled at the lack of leadership from Mayor Elise Carter and the iron fist she thinks she rules with. Good for the City Council members willing to stand up to this egotistical politician ! The right thing for Mayor Carter to do for the residents of LaGrange is to resign from office immediately and let the healing begin...but then the same thing could be said as well for our Oldham County Judge/Executive !

My Response to a Comment Left Elsewhere...

As previously stated, I had emailed two other Oldham County related bloggers, Scott Black and Dewey Wotring and got replies back from both. Scott was originally so kind as to add a link to this blog on his site, and I returned the favor.

Since then, he has emailed me regarding a posting of mine and commented on one of my postings here. Then without explanation (not that he owes me one) he removed the link to my blog from his site. That's OK, it's his right to do as he pleases...I, on the other hand, have left the link to his site here.

In a posting of his titled "SOMETIMES CALM IS GOOD", March 1st, there was a comment left for him by "Resident", dated March 5, 2009 at 1:50pm. This is the same posting of his that mentioned my blog and link, and then was removed.

"Resident" commented as follows:

"You were correct to delete the link to Oldham Observer. Whoever is running the site is idiot."

My reply to "Resident": You're certainly entitled to your opinion, and I would advise going back to elementary school and taking a grammer refresher course.

McConnell, Bunning, Yarmuth, Grayson, Williams and more, Oh My!

Wow, what a week or so we've had with some state level politicians. Just a few observations on some of them from my point of view...

Senator Minority Leader (using that term loosely) Mitch McConnell-R...Kentucky's Finest ! Ok, being sarcastic here. He is the finest at being an obstructionist to President Barack Obama's first 50 days in office. He talks out of both sides of his mouth, always has. He balks now at the $410 billion spending bill that the Senate approved (62-35) on Tuesday. He sits on the Senate Appropriations Committee, and last year when most of the appropriations bill was written, he was all in favor of it. Of course, his buddy George W. Bush was still sitting in the Oval Office. Now that Barack Obama is our leader and "W" is in hiding in Texas, he does an about face and objects, voting against the bill. Yet, he managed to slide in earmarks (either being the sole sponsor or co-sponsor) of 53 earmarks, costing us taxpayers over $75 million. And the kicker, none of these earmarks were put on the table last year by former President Bush. McConnell neads to remember this...the nation elected Obama over McCain, signaling that as a whole, it was time to change directions in the federal government. McConnell himself didn't exactly win reelection last November to a fourth term in a landslide. He needs to be held accountable for his actions, and be more concerned with the people of Kentucky he was elected to serve, rather than being a national mouthpiece for the Republican party. Wonder how long it will take him to tout his pork projects on his senate website and every ribbon cutting and ceremonial check presentation he makes across the state in the coming year?

Senator Jim Bunning, our junior and mouthy senator...enough already! Please, for the sake of the Bluegrass, resign now and leave with what little diginty you may have left. Your comments about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg were pathetic at best. You alledgely threatened at a recent private fundraiser to resign and let our Democratic Governor Steve Breshear appoint your replacement (most likely a Democrat of course) since you're not feeling the love from your own party. This week, in your weekly conference call with state reporters, you took the Lord's name in vain and got downright nasty with them. You missed key Senate votes and confirmation hearings in January because you had better things to do. You refuse to be upfront and honest about your so-called charity work and the money you make selling your autographs. Quit apologizing for your obvious shortcomings...resign and save face. Do it for Kentucky. If there was a Senate Hall of Shame (and there should be one), you'd be elected. Then you could boast about it along with your baseball Hall of Fame enshrinement. You were a good pitcher back in the day, even had a perfect game, but your game skills are gone and you need to be sent to the dugout...

Representative John Yarmuth-D 3rd District...A shining example of a public servant if there ever was one. Donates his entire congressional salary to local charities, is always accessible to the media, champions education and veterans and does it all and more with humility. True, in the new federal spending bill, he has 17 earmarks totalling around $12.4 million. But he does represent the state's largest city (or metro area) and almost $7 million of his earmarks are related to the Ohio River. $6 million for work on the McAlpine Locks and Dam and $950,000 for work on the Ohio River Bridges Project. While his wealth allows him to donate his congressional salary to charity, he works tirelessly for metro Louisville's residents and all Kentuckians. What's the matter Mitch and Jim, aren't either of you wealthy enough by now to donate your salaries back to your home state? John Yarmuth is study in work ethics and public service. Maybe others could watch and learn from him.

Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson-R...Let's hope you decide to run for Bunning's seat whether he chooses to run again or not. You are a bright and capable public servant and the Republican party would do good to have you as their heir apparent state party leader to Mc Double Speak Connell. That's not to say I would support you in the General Election in 2010, although I did vote to reelect you to your present second term. I vote each indivdual race based on who I feel is best qualified to get the job done and be held accountable. But you do offer a ray of hope to people and have been scandal free. Good things are in your future still.

Kentucky State Senate President David Williams-R...Have you ever met a camera you didn't like? Ever thought that maybe you are wrong sometimes? Ever thought that you should actually put the interests of the people of this Commonwealth above party politics and your grandstanding ways? Probably not...in fact, you very well may be one of the most closed minded, egotistical politicians this state has ever seen. By the way, how's that big screen plasma television in your senate office (when it was redecorated) that we paid for working out for you?

That's enough for now...time to go cheer on the University of Louisville Cardinals in the Big East Tournament...go CARDS...and keep an eye on the University of Kentucky Wildcats in the SEC Tournament...go Cats!

Update: Games are over...Big East Regular Season Champions CARDS win 73-55 over Providence! Kentucky Wildcats win their first round SEC opener against Ole Miss 71-58...way to go Cats!

An Update and a Tribute to WHAS-11's Chuck Olmstead

Well, I took a few days off and away from the blog due to a heavy demand on my time. The nice thing about having your own blog is that you can choose to post when you want and not have any deadliines to meet. However, I do respond to emails in a timely manner. The past week has been a busy one: work demands, attending a child's birthday party, meeting the needs of my Granddaughter, spending time with friends, watching Nascar and U of L (go Cards!) and other family matters. I'm currently working on a new blog entry that I hope to have completed later today. And just for the record, while the main thrust of this blog is about Oldham County politics and government, I also reserve the right to comment on statewide and national issues from time to time, since state and federal government issues can and do affect Oldham County as well.

My tribute to the late Chuck Olmstead of WHAS-11 television...when I began college in 1977, I was accepted into the Internship Program that WHAS television had going back then. I grew up around television news (not WHAS though) and was pursuing a degree in journalism. I wanted to get my foot in the door and was eager to absorb and learn all I could about television news journalism. My internship lasted through the fall semester, followed by an internship in the spring in radio news, hence the beginning of the radio career that I had.

The way the program worked at WHAS was rather unique at the time. An intern spent two week rotations in various capacities in the newsroom. I spent two week intervals shadowing and learning from Hal Stophel, the assignment editor, a photojournalist, Paul Rogers in sports, the late Chuck Taylor in weather (back when they used magnets on a weathermap), Jim Mitchell at the anchor desk, copywriting with everyone, floor directors and a two week rotation with a reporter. I got lucky...I was paired with none other than Chuck Olmstead.

Chuck had been in town for about two years at the time and was very gracious and giving of his time to me. He was about 11 years my senior and two things I remember well of our first day together...age was not a barrier and neither was the difference in the color of our skin. Chuck was actually in my opinion a trailblazer as an African-American reporter. He showed no bias in any story he reported and implored in me that getting your facts straight and being accurate were the hallmarks of being a good reporter.

Spending two weeks riding along with him and his photojournalist to cover various stories were a treat. We talked about the story at hand, news reporting, current events and about Louisville. Knowing that I was a Louisville native, he constantly asked me about local history (since he knew my own background at the ripe old age of 17), local politics and shared his passion for true journalism. He was a storyteller, and an extremely gifted one at that. And I loved his stories about his native city of Boston. Humor in things was not lost on him and he could be so serious one moment, and funny as hell the next.

Chuck and I stayed in touch over the years, as he promised he would. He offered me advice, followed my career in radio from a distance, and always asked about my family and life in general. When I left radio for good a few years back, we ran into each other at The Comedy Caravan. He was there taping a show with his two sons and we spent some time catching up and commenting on the downward spiral direction that a lot of local journalism had taken. I assured him that I was happy in my new career and that while I missed the radio days, the decision I had made was the right one for me. In our brief time together, he became a friend and mentor in many ways, and for that I am grateful.

To have stayed in the same market for going on 35 years (except for that short six month trip to New York) is in itself, amazing. Chuck loved Louisville and Kentucky, our people and his work. In this day of revolving doors and cutbacks in the media, his tenure here is pretty remarkable.

Chuck, when you read this from Heaven, know that I always thought of you as a class act, a man with integrity, a family first attitude and the passion for getting it right. Many of the reporters you've left behind could do well to learn from the legacy that is yours. Your body of work stands tall. Thank you and may God bless you and your wife and sons always.

Storm Water Payment Follow-Up

Sitting here watching the U of L Cardinals and thought I'd relate my phone call yesterday to the number included with our Storm Water District Statement (see previous post).

I spoke with a very nice gentleman by the name of Tim. When I questioned why we would mail our payments to an address in Carol Stream, IL, his reply was that no bank or other entity was willing to handle processing the payments as they arrive. When further pressed, he told me that he thinks the fee being charged is 30 cents per transaction. Not too bad a deal I suppose, but it does make me wonder why Fiscal Court didn't mandate and have the Oldham County Sewer District process the payments (or the Oldham County Water District, since we already pay our sewer bill through them) instead of paying a third party fee. Who made that choice to send the business out of state? Inquiring minds want to know...

Furthermore, and Tim was very generous with his time (explaining how inundated they had already been with calls), he also verified that if you go to the website listed on the statement (in very small print), you can also pay the fee online with no service or processing fee being charged. Now that option I like!

He admitted that this was all relatively new to him since he has only been employed with Oldham County government since December. Through the course of our conversation, I learned that he lives in Louisville, not Oldham County. I gained this information when he said he couldn't pay online himself (to test the system) since he is not a resident of Oldham County. I thanked him for his time and wished him luck with his new job here in Oldham County.

Which leads me to...

Now I gathered that Tim is a very fine person...but why in the world is Oldham County Fiscal Court hiring people that do not live here, pay property or vehicle taxes here, or are not otherwise invested in our county except for their employment? With the current state of things in this difficult economic time our country (and county) are under, can Fiscal Court not find qualified government employees right here in the good ol' OC?

With the influx of former Jefferson County residents (myself included) that have chosen to call Oldham County home, can Fiscal Court not give preference or pass an ordinance that stipulates that ALL county government employees must be residents of this county? State law does allow such a requirement. I'd be in favor of allowing any current employees that reside outside of Oldham County to keep their current position up until the expiration of the current County Judge/Executive's term. Even if Duane Murner runs for a second term, ALL employees must be residents of Oldham County on the first day of the next term of office for whoever is elected County Judge/Executive, or they shall be terminated. This gives them ample time to plan ahead. I know that may sound harsh to some, but consider this...why shouldn't residency be a job requirement? Keep Oldham County government jobs in the hands of Oldham County residents!

OC Storm Water District Payment Statement

Monday afternoon, waiting in our mailbox was the statement/bill from the Oldham County Storm Water District in the amount of $41.16.

Amazing !

(See the last paragraphs for the kicker to all of this, and a suggestion!)

We're being billed for the "calculated average" of 6,000 square feet of impervious (hard) surface, and our property falls far short of that "average". Guess those that can afford to live on much larger lots (generating much more storm water runoff) get by cheaper than the rest of us. It seems to me that the PVA has the statistics to fairly accurately pinpoint each homeowner's lot size, and therefore Fiscal Court should have voted and mandated a better and more equitable system for the purpose of billing residential landowners. Remember, they bascially let the developers off the hook...

While I'm all for clean air, water and land and taking better care of Mother Earth in general, it would be a much easier pill to swallow if we had a Fiscal Court that had taken the time to devise a system that was truly fair to everyone. Our property taxes are calculated in such a way...why not this fee? In our home, we recycle as much as possible, and of course we have to take our recyled items elsewhere to properly dispose of them since we have no curb service here. That's a sore spot with me.

Furthermore, maybe if we had a Water and Sewer District that were better managed and with leaders that had the vision to handle this federal mandate, we wouldn't have had this forced upon us in the manner that has taken place. Fiscal Court has once again proven they can't properly handle the rapid growth of this county that they want, and remain fair to those who have called Oldham County home for many years.

This is still a rural county in many ways...yet we have traffic problems now, storm water runoff problems, roads that need repair, an industrial park that so far is pretty much a bust (and we, the taxpayers are funding it) and a Fiscal Court that simply seems not to care. Build it and they will come...at what expense?

Two final points on this statement/bill that we received yesterday...

1 - How fair is it to those on fixed incomes, the unemployed or those struggling in general financially to get a statement in early March that states this bill for $41.16 is due in full by March 29, 2009? Pay after the due date and pay a late fee of $4.11. This must be a drop in the bucket payment for every member of Fiscal Court, who no doubt carry a lack of sympathy for those suffering through hard times right now.

2 - Answer this Fiscal Court members...in these hard economic times, why in the world are we being asked to mail our payments to a processing center in Carol Stream, Illinois? The enclosed payment envelop is addressed to:

Are we providing employment opportunities for our friends in another state? Why are the payments not being processed right here in Oldham County? Once again, it sounds like Fiscal Court is making "closed door" decisions and hoping that we won't question them.

Of course, in VERY small print on your statement, there is the option to pay the bill in person at the County Judge/Executive's office during normal business hours. Therefore, I suggest that as many people as possible make their payment in person at Mr. Murner's office. This affords you two opportunities...one, you can express your displeasure with all of this and how it was handled in person...secondly, maybe it will give Deputy County/Judge Executive Paula Gish something substantial to do...process your payments and thank you in person on behalf of the county and Fiscal Court. After all, in her welcome message on the official Oldham County government website http://www.oldhamcounty.net/ she states the following:
"Along with sharing the mission and goals established by Judge Murner, I am also the point of contact in county government responsible for coordinating county-wide initiatives among the various organizations and county agencies."
So, let's allow her to be that "point of contact"...and let her count your pennies!

Good Monday morning all,

As stated earlier, I had in the interest of full disclosure emailed two other known Oldham County bloggers, Dewey Wotring and Scott Black. I am pleased to say that I received very nice and supportive emails back from both gentlemen. Scott was so kind as to include a link to this site on his most recent posting. Both provided some very helpful information and it is greatly appreciated.

As word of this blog spreads and hopefully my readership grows, I want to remind everyone that this site is not meant to be vindictive or disrespectful of anyone. It is meant to inform, educate and question the actions of Fiscal Court, the County Judge/Executive, Magsistrates and other government officials and entities.

In the Interest of Full Disclosure

Just thought that I should let everyone know that since I had mentioned two other bloggers in the Oldham County area in my Introduction, I have since emailed them both and sent them a link to this site. As stated earlier, I have never met or spoken with either Dewey Wotring or Scott Black. I'm not totally familiar with their backgrounds or who they may be related to or friends with. I have read their postings from time to time and while I may agree or disagree with some of their postings, at least they make the effort to be involved in their own chosen ways about what goes on in Oldham County. This effort of mine is not meant to be adversarial in any way towards anyone. I'm simply providing yet another forum for public comment. (Unlike the four minute Fiscal Court limit !) The more dialogue that goes on, the better off we all will be.

Good Eats in Crestwood

Two weekends ago my wife and I visited the new Steve-O's Italian Kitchen located on the 329 Bypass. I have long been a patron of the original location in Buckner and was glad to see Steve expanding his offerings, especially in these tough economic times. As he told us when he came by our table to check on things, he places his faith in the Lord and we hope Steve does well in his new expanded location. My wife had never eaten at the original location, and she was impressed with her first visit to Steve-O's !
Our review:
Food - Excellent and generous portions
Service - Excellent and attentive service by Donna
Value - Very reasonable
Environment - Clean and bright
Going Back ? - You bet we will !
Great job Steve and staff !

Just a Few Musings and Questions

Does Oldham County Fiscal Court need a strict Ethics Ordinance governing all members of Fiscal Court and all elected county government office holders and their employees?

Yes !

Who knows, maybe they have one, but judging by some actions, maybe not.

Item #1 - County Judge/Executive Duane Murner and his wife Anne have appeared in print advertisements for River's Landing, the development where they moved to. In the ad, it clearly identifies him as "Judge" Duane Murner. What, if any, compensation did he receive for this endorsement? Isn't it ethically wrong of him and River's Landing to associate his elected title with such an advertisement, as if all of Oldham County government endorses the development? The ads have appeared in The Oldham Era. There is nothing wrong with him and his wife appearing in the ads, but it's just plain and simply wrong to add the title of "Judge" before his name. C'mon Judge, Louisville Mayor for Life Jerry Abramson appears in civic and public service ads all the time...but I've never seen him hawking a for-profit, private real estate company's project.

Item #2 - Magistrate Scott Davis...OK, you've won your lawsuit against our county and Fiscal Court, and I'm sure you're pleased as punch about it. You cost us, the taxpayers money. While you were vindicated to a degree, what are your plans for the monetary award you will receive (less actual attorney fees) once it's in your hands? Will you donate it back to the taxpayers? To charity? Or your own bank account? Inquiring minds want to know...

So, I'd love to hear your thoughts and comments...and maybe, just maybe we'll get some answers. If any of my readers are also aware of an Ethics Ordinance that covers Oldham County Fiscal Court, and others, please let me know about it.

An Introduction and Welcome Message

Welcome to my newest spot in cyberspace...my blog about Oldham County, KY government and more. Observations about how Fiscal Court does the "people's business", or in some cases, the "business" of the "special interests" friends of the Court, or some of it's current members.

Of course, I'll also be posting observations, thoughts, musings and asking questions out loud about other things too. They could cover a wide range of topics, issues, events and people. There are times when I will be very serious, sometimes funny I hope, sarcastic at other times and always a promoter of all things in Oldham County and our businesses and people.

Who am I ? You can read my profile for the information I'm currently making available. And if you ask why I am not being forthcoming at this point about my actual identity, I will answer with this: We live in a country that guarantees free speech, and it is my choice for now to protect myself, my family members and my place of employment from possible retributions from those who might seek to inflict harm or harrassment against me or them since I am speaking my mind. There will come a time when I will reveal my true identity, but for now, I ask for your understanding in my need to protect my privacy and I hope that you'll participate in this blog.

I welcome your comments, questions and encourage you to participate. Play nice, play fair and above all else, be factual in your postings. The current state of the Oldham County Fiscal Court does to some degree lack total transparency, honesty, integrity and most of all, ethics. Change needs to come to Fiscal Court so that it can in the future better serve ALL residents of Oldham County, not just the chosen few, as is sometimes the case. Tax dollars (our money) need to be spent wisely and always in ways that benefit everyone.

Finally, for now, let me state for the record that I have no ties to anyone currently serving on Fiscal Court, anyone from past Fiscal Courts, or anyone currently or formerly employed in Oldham County government. I know there are other bloggers out there who also have made Oldham County government the main topic of their blogs. These include Dewey Wotring and Scott Black, two gentlemen I have never met or spoken to. I have visited their blogs from time to time and decided that I wanted to not only create my own, but also create a blog with a very separate identity. My purpose is not to imitate them, have a specific agenda on anyone's behalf, or push a certain issue that may come before the Court. My agenda is to simply state my observations, be factual and question the actions of Fiscal Court or any of the Magistrates when I feel the need to.

And...just in case you're wondering...I am a registered voter, have been since I turned 18, and it has been a rare occasion when I have missed participating in the electoral process. It's easy for people to complain about their elected officials, government entities and so forth...but it is my belief that if you don't vote, don't gripe. Get involved, register to vote, go to the polls...be a part of the solution, not the problem.

So, feel free to jump in as this blog evolves into whatever it becomes...and participate...
